What’s the Difference Between a Spec Home and a Custom Home?

Research indicates that about 10% of the population is looking for a home at any given time during the year. If you are one of those 10%, you may need to know the difference between the spec home and a custom home. If you’re looking for a new home, these are terms you have to know. Here is more information about the difference between the two, and why one may be better for you than the other.

Spec Home vs. Custom Home

If you are looking at a spec home, you are looking at a home that was constructed to spec. That means that the home was built without an owner in mind. In many cases, a spec home may be in a neighborhood with a lot of other homes designed to spec. Usually all of the spec homes have a similar design on its interior as well. For example, the spec homes made by the same builder would have the same kitchen configuration with the same appliances.

In contrast, the custom home is built according to the wishes of a specific homeowner. While the custom home may also be in a neighborhood, it will not look like the other homes in the neighborhood. Custom homes may begin with a template, but the homeowner decides what kinds of changes to make. For example, if you cook a lot, you may want a larger kitchen with a double oven, a huge pantry, and an island with seating. You have the ability to customize the walls, floors, windows, and any other features you want for your home.
